Porterfield elaborates via email: “The area of concern is low lying and was developed from a hardwood wetland that drained surrounding hills into the lake. Many years ago, a canal was dug through the wetland and connected to Lake Hollingsworth. Due to the low lying nature of the Buckingham Avenue, street and residence flooding occurs during the rainy season when the lake stage is naturally high and heavy rains are common. When this happens, we have to pump water out of the ditch to the lake in an effort to alleviate flooding issues.”
